Through a Plastic Lens: Explore the Magic of Holga Photography

The Holga camera, with its minimalistic design and unique quirks, has captured the hearts of photographers worldwide. A plastic camera with just one shutter speed and two light settings, “sunny” and “not sunny,” the Holga challenges conventional photographic norms. But it’s precisely these limitations that make the Holga so special. Its little plastic lens creates dreamy and ethereal images that captivate both photographers and viewers alike.

Lead by Karey Walter, one of Atlanta’s foremost analog photographers and educators, this workshop offers hands-on experience with the Holga camera, the funky plastic marvel that played a pivotal role in shaping the renowned square format and filters of Instagram. By participating in this workshop, you’ll not only delve into the art of Holga photography but also gain insight into its influential impact on modern visual culture.

During the first session you will receive your own Holga camera and two rolls of film. You’ll also learn how to load film, and how to embrace the Holga’s quirks to compose captivating imagery. You will then have a week with your camera to create your own unique images. In the second and third sessions Karey will guide you through developing film, scanning negatives, and transforming them into digital prints. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer curious about the Holga’s unique charm or a beginner looking to try something new, this workshop is designed for anyone seeking to broaden their creative horizons.

No prior film photography experience or equipment is necessary – just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to see the world through a different lens. The workshop, sponsored by Freestyle Photo and Supplies, will provide participants with a Holga camera of their own, two rolls of Ilford Delta 400 film, all necessary processing materials, and paper for digital printing.

Join us at The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia, and explore the magic of Holga photography. Discover the allure of simplicity, learn to embrace imperfections, and create stunning images that will leave a lasting impression.

Please note that space is limited, so secure your spot now to ensure your participation.
