Family Diary 2026

Photographers working in traditional, analog, or documentary modes, this call was written with your work in mind.

A “family diary” does not require casual snapshots or overt autobiography. At its core, this exhibition values continuity, close observation, and lived experience: principles long central to traditional photography. Sustained portrait projects, long-term documentary work, studies of domestic space, community, or generational change are inherently diaristic, even when approached with formal rigor and classical technique.

Family is defined broadly here: biological, chosen, imagined, or inherited through place, routine, or relationship. Many archival, serial, or typological projects already function as visual journals, whether or not they were conceived that way.

This exhibition is not asking you to change how you work, only to recognize how your existing work already engages memory, belonging, and time.

All photographic approaches are welcome — analog, digital, mixed media, or video stills.

Up to 24 artists will be selected for this exhibition. Multiple images (2-4) per artist will be selected. All images must be in either a white or black frame. No colored mats. Framed images can be up to 30″ on the long side.

Our esteemed juror for this exhibition will be Jamie M. Allen, the Stephen B. and Janice G. Ashley Curator and Head of the Department of Photography at the George Eastman Museum.

George Eastman Museum

The George Eastman Museum is located in Rochester, New York, on the estate of George Eastman, the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film. Founded in 1947 as an independent nonprofit institution, it is the world’s oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives. The museum holds unparalleled collections—encompassing several million objects—in the fields of photography, cinema, and photographic and cinematographic technology, and photographically illustrated books. The institution is also a longtime leader in film preservation and photographic conservation.

In addition to activities in Rochester, New York, Eastman Museum Los Angeles, a newly launched venture of the George Eastman Museum, was established in 2024 with the mission of contributing to arts, culture, and education in Los Angeles.

Primary activities include curating exhibitions, organizing public programming, and offering educational programs that explore photography, moving images, and related technology.
