Atlanta is a city rich in diverse culture. In 2022 APG launched a series of micro-exhibitions focused on the lens-based artists within the varied communities that make up our member base at APG. The lens-based exhibitions will be curated and on view from 7-14 days in our gallery in between our flagship exhibitions.
Darnell Wilburn, APG’ s Director of Media and Cultural Outreach spearheaded this initiative called Eyes on Atlanta: Windows into our Community. The initiative kicked off with the first micro- exhibition called Eyes on Atlanta: Black Contemporary Photography, and curated by Wilburn, on April 18, 2022.

Blacks are not a monolith. That’s what this exhibition is set forth to assert. By highlighting these wonderful artists, this proclamation became a showcase for beauty, architecture, portraiture, conceptual, abstract, and documentary photography created by black artists who are varied in the way they capture and process imagery. In this exhibition you will find that in some instances, their blackness is centered in their work. In other instances, it has informed the work, but isn’t the focus of the work. While there may be a shared experience, each is left to determine their distinctive, singular voice. That’s what makes each artist unique.
