Artist Statement
Conversations with Myself and Conversations Continued explore the experience of constantly shifting notions of self. The sense of time is not linear; the past intervenes and destabilizes the present. The inclusion of vintage references, from objects to wardrobe, signals personal history and brings time forward. The mirror is a portal to a liminal space; the repetition of self-regard creates a sense of urgency. Aging is an ambiguous continuum, with competing moods and insights. The photographs are “still,” but the psyche is in motion.
Jo Ann Chaus
Jo Ann Chaus is a visual artist from and based in the New York metropolitan area. In her work she explores the psychological states of mind of women in her self portrait and still life work, she as a stand in for any woman. She dialogs with the women of the past, known and unknown, the contemporary women of today, and the girls who are yet to be women. She is interested in having and holding the power as an individual, to be as they are, separate and apart from roles and expectations dictated and adopted from society at large. She draws from her own embedded experiences as a woman, wife and mother and asks the viewer to share their narratives along with hers.
Jo Ann is a graduate from two International Center of Photography programs in 2013 and 2017. Her influences include the color greats: Saul Leiter, Stephen Shore, William Eggleston and Irving Penn. Her exhibitions and recognitions include Photolucida’s Critical Mass top 50 in 2023 and 2022; BBA Artist prize, finalist, Berlin, December 2023; Atlanta Photography Group Solo Exhibition December 2023; Julia Margaret Cameron Overall Portfolio Winner, Solo Exhibition 2024, Barcelona; Cortona on the Move Solo Exhibition 2021, Cortona, Italy; Soho Photo Gallery Solo exhibition 2021, NYC; Fotonostrum Gala Awards Solo exhibition 2019, Barcelona Spain.
