Into the Studio

Into the Studio is a new series that offers an intimate look into processes and workflows of working fine art photographers. In this series working artists will take you behind the scenes, and show you how they create work, using a variety of methods and materials. From digital to alternative process and mixed-media, these capsule classes are designed to spark new ideas, and introduce new ways to use materials in your own work. Join us In the Studio, and start taking your creative process to the next level.

Encaustics Demo
with Dave Gastineau

In his Encaustic Demo, Dave will take you through the process of dry mounting, trimming, and prepping a print to take R&F encaustic medium. He will demonstrate how to work with multiple layers of wax, fuse them with a heat gun and blow torch, then address hand coloring techniques using oil sticks. Dave primarily uses Cyanotypes and Lumen prints as the base for his encaustic work. However, the techniques used in this workshop can be applied to silver gelatin or inkjet prints, as well. Please join Dave as he demonstrates how  creates one of a kind photographic objects using the encaustic process.

Instructor’s Bio

Dave Gastineau is an Atlanta, GA based fine art photographer.  He received his BFA in Photography from The Art Institute of Atlanta in 2006.  Dave specializes in traditional analog black and white and alternative processes; he will occasionally use digital cameras when the need arises.  He also enjoys painting abstract compositions, and is now exploring these techniques in his art.  Having always been a photographer, painting is a new way for him to exercise his creative process.

During his studies, Dave fell in love with Alternative Photographic Processes.  The techniques used in his alternative processes create one of a kind prints. These images can never be made the exact same way again, making them truly unique objects.  He enjoys the challenge of these techniques, where success is to have somewhat controllable results.  Much of the beauty is found in never knowing exactly how each print will turn out.  He finds surrendering to the process and letting the elements dictate the outcome quite invigorating.

For his black and white work, Dave strives to push film to its limits to unveil the capabilities within.  He uses multiple exposures as a way of creating a window into another reality.  By layering exposures onto film, he is able to create another dimension, and make one question the reality of a two dimensional medium.  Dave is constantly driven to be creative and finds inspiration everywhere, which is reflected in the variety of images he creates.

Beyond the Collage: A Mixed-Media Demo
with John Huzinec

In this demo John Huzinec will show you how to break away from traditional photographic collage by using the camera as a tool for photography-based mixed media imagery. John will demonstrate how to use motion blurs, projectors, and double exposures in combination with digital and traditional collage techniques, sketches, and found objects to accentuate tonal values and color schemes within your compositions. He will also discuss how and when to use editor systems, how to break from them, and if/when to return to using them. If you are interested in exploring ways to take multilayered themes or abstract aesthetics to a new level, please join John “In the Studio” to get an up-close look at his process.

Instructor’s Bio

John Huzinec was born in New Jersey, growing up around photography and creativity. His father, an amateur photographer, bought John his first few cameras at a young age.

After doing collegiate photojournalism and commercial portrait work, he took a long break from photography. John picked up photography once again in 2012, using his camera as means of self-discovery and growth, while also exploring abstract and surreal concepts. Along the way, he found inspiration from photographers such as Minor White, Arron Siskind and Josef Koudelka. In the summer of 2018, John started to experiment with collage and other mixed media. This led to focusing and observing the concepts of family, anxieties and the everyday struggles of life.
