From The Archives: Ron Sherman

APG is honored to present our first official Maloof Gallery Exhibition – From the Archives: Ron Sherman. A veteran photojournalist, and long-time APG member, Ron’s archive of over 50,000 images was recently acquired by Emory University’s Rose MARBL Library. This is a rare opportunity to view selected imagery from the archives of Ron Sherman.

About Ron Sherman

Ron Sherman’s first published photograph was in junior high school, Sixty five years later he still gets a great pleasure in seeing his images published.  In 2022 Emory University Rose MARBL Library acquired his 50 year photographic archives of over 500,000 black and white negatives and color transparencies created during his long career. In 2014 the Rose Library acquired his 750 silver gelatin collection of 1970s Atlanta prints. These photographs are available at their Library for research, publication, and display.

His credited large photograph of Hank Aaron rounding second base, being greeted by two teenagers, after hitting his 715th home run, is hanging in the permanent exhibit in the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum.  With many photographers covering the game, his is the only known photograph of that moment in time.  The National Museum of African American History and the Martin L King Center also have his photographs in their permanent collections.

Ron’s photographs have been published in national magazines ranging from Time, Life, and Newsweek to Business Week, Forbes and Sports Illustrated.  His corporate assignments have been featured in annual reports, brochures and multimedia productions for a wide variety of Fortune 500 companies including IBM, Eastman Kodak, Coca-Cola, BellSouth (now AT&T), and the Southern Company.  For more than 30 years he has made a specialty of capturing the essence of campus life in photo-essays on more than 130 colleges and universities across the United States and Canada.

Photographs from his stock photo library of some 100,000 color and black & white images were regularly leased for a variety of publication purposes.  Tony Stone Images and Getty Images previously represented selected photographs for national and international distribution.  BrownTrout published a Ron Sherman Atlanta calendar from 1994 to 2010.  His images captured the classic beauty of Atlanta and Georgia. They have also been published in four Atlanta hardcover photographic books.

Ron started Computer Aided Photography, Inc. in 1991 to explore the creative possibilities of using a combination of photography and computer technology.  His foresight has allowed him to stay on the leading edge of his craft and complete many unique projects.  With a Fine Arts Degree in Photographic Illustration from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a Masters of Arts in Communications from Syracuse University, Ron has been profiled in a number of photography publications and was listed in Who’s Who in America.
