Workshop: Writing for Photographic Artists

Workshop Description –

Learn to write about your photography and craft effective and convincing artist statements. Photographer and author, Micah Cash, will walk you through what makes a compelling artist statement, and how to articulate your process and concept for a variety of outlets – including project proposals, grant applications, and long-form essays for publication. Participants will workshop their artist statements with the group and learn how to adapt their narratives for exhibitions and publication.

How to Write about Your Photography

• Photographers must be able to articulate their concepts and processes in compelling and clear ways. Learn how to write better artist statements, grant narratives, and project proposals.
• Participants should prepare a long-form artist statement (250-300 words) from a current body of work. This writing sample will be edited and discussed during the workshop.
• The 250-300 word writing sample will be shared with all participants. This workshop gives you all that! Over the course of two classes, photographer, artist and author, Micah Cash walks you through a process that you can follow for future projects. You’ll emerge with a polished, concise and informative statement that gets people excited and interested in your work.

Artists should bring a copy of their most recent artist statement (if you have one) and 3-5 images from their project for context

Prework Requirement –

Instructor’s Bio –

Micah Cash is a visual artist, educator, and writer. Micah exhibits nationally in both solo and group exhibitions, most recently at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and The Mint Museum in Charlotte, North Carolina. He speaks widely about his work and the cultural constructs of landscape. He has published two photography books: Waffle House Vistas, published by The Bitter Southerner in 2019 and Dangerous Waters: A Photo Essay on the Tennessee Valley Authority, published by University of Tennessee Press in 2017. His work has been featured in POLITICO Magazine, The Atlantic, Fraction Magazine, and Places Journal. He received his MFA from the University of Connecticut and his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of South Carolina. He lives and works in Charlotte, North Carolina.
