The Photographic Portfolio: Project Development with Beth Lilly

APG is excited to announce our latest Project Development Intensive Workshop with Beth Lilly. This intensive workshop consists of a series of 10 classes spread out over a 4-month period. Intended to help you develop the skills, knowledge, and structure necessary to create a photographic series or enrich a current body of work, this workshop combines the benefits of engaging a mentor for an extended period, with the structure that regular participation in supportive group critiques can offer. In this intensive, accomplished artist and educator Beth Lilly will give presentations, provide interactive exercises, moderate group critiques, and mentor photographers as they work toward developing a photographic series.

A few of the things that will be addressed in this workshop are:

  • Defining a what is a series and why would I want to work in that mode
  • Discussing the ways that other artists approach beginning a series
  • Developing techniques for turning an idea into series
  • Exploring how writing can support the development of your project
  • Learning how to look at, and talk about work through group critique
  • Gaining proficiency in editing and sequencing
  • Developing techniques for getting over photographer’s block
  • Communicating effectively about your project

WHO SHOULD ATTEND: This workshop is open to photographic artists of any level interested in developing a new body of work, or moving forward in an existing project. However, all participants do need to have a working knowledge of their photographic processes. This includes includes image capture and print output (whether you print yourself or through a lab), as well as editing and image management software such as Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom.

Please note that this class will require significant out of class work time.  Students should be committed attending classes, shooting, and participating in discussion.

Beth, I got some good news today and you’re the first person I want to thank. My project has been selected for exhibition and I have you to thank for helping with the editing of the images and especially for your efforts with the artist statement and bio. Your advice and critical eye/mind have been invaluable in helping me fine tune the presentation of the project. You are awesome!!!  Thank you thank you thank you!”

Thanks for all your marvelous instruction.  Each lesson was a fine challenge…I was learning 100% of the time. Thanks for all your thought and work you put into our classes.

Your insight on all submitted (work) was impressive and on point.

The portfolio workshop was WONDERFUL! Thank you for creating such a complete and engaging experience. Best workshop I have ever taken at APG, by far. So glad I did it.
