The Atlanta Photography Group is excited to announce our next CFE, Tell Me A Story, which is celebrating street and documentary photography of all styles with a strong narrative. We are looking for your most compelling stories – they can be candid depictions of everyday life, shadows of the city streets, the abandonment of a country road, subtle moments of joy, humor, love, fear or anxiety. Think of work like that created by Diane Arbus, Bruce Davidson, Robert Frank, Josef Koudleka, Helen Levitt, Baldwin Lee, Roy DeCarava, Mary Ellen Mark, Daido Moriyama, Lee Friedlander, Lisette Model, Gordon Parks, and Harry Callahan.

Led by Atlanta-based photographic artist Russell Cambron, who holds M.F.A. degrees in writing and photography, the Written Pictures workshop explores techniques for successfully blending images and text to create impactful narratives. Written Pictures will begin by looking at the ways lens-based artists employ text in their work. This will include a survey of photographers like Barbara Kruger and Shirin Neshat, who overlay text on their images to make pointed social critique; Duane Michals, whose handwritten texts weave together his photographs into whimsical and philosophical narratives; and Bernard Faucon, who inserts three-dimensional text sculptures into landscapes and, at other times, writes directly on his subjects. We will also consider participants’ unique interests and visions for combining text with their images and will tailor the workshop accordingly. Over the course of our three sessions together, participants will realize their own compositions of images and text and will have the opportunity to benefit from each other’s experience and expertise through a series of workshop critiques.

APG is thrilled to have Jeff Phillips teaching a 2-day workshop on photo zines. A photo zine is most often a hand-made, self-published book that is easy and inexpensive to create. Zines offer exciting potential as a platform for creative expression and as a democratized platform that can help get your work out into the world. In the digital age, a photo zine can fulfill the desire to make, hold, feel, and sense a tangible art object. Photo zines can help artists raise awareness about their work, reach new audiences in a fresh new style. Making a photo zine can also help you test the waters if you plan to publish a photo book.

Peter Essick and APG have made special arrangements with Fernbank to allow APG members exclusive early morning access to photograph the beautiful Fernbank Forest during sunrise. Explore more than 2 miles of paths winding through Fernbank Forest, a 65-acre old-growth forest. Though located just minutes from the bustling heart of Atlanta, Fernbank Forest offers an unmatched nature experience. Walk among trees towering 16 stories above the ground and discover breathtaking views of the natural landscape. Listen closely for the sounds of a trickling creek or perhaps the calls of songbirds overhead. It's not just our feathered friends to look out for — the forest is home to hundreds of animal species including amphibians, reptiles and mammals. Additionally, there are countless plant species that provide critical habitat year-round and vibrant foliage and blossoms from spring through fall. Even in winter, the forest offers stunning views you can only see once the leaves have dropped. Please note that Fernbank Forest is an old-growth forest with some areas that include rugged and/or steep terrain. However, WildWoods includes ADA-accessible pathways to allow all guests access to nature.
